Clarke Global Logistics Helps Grill’d Launch Its First International Restaurant in Bali

Overview: Establishing a Global Footprint in a Complex Market

Grill’d Healthy Burgers sought to expand its operations into the competitive and highly regulated Bali, Indonesia market to serve the large Australian and foreign national demographic. This ambitious move required more than just standard freight; it demanded an expert partner capable of navigating Indonesia’s stringent food import compliance and securing product-specific licenses for their proprietary ingredients. Clarke Global Logistics (CGL), led by Director Martin Moyano, stepped in to provide an end-to-end, inception-to-delivery solution, effectively acting as Grill’d’s outsourced international trade compliance department.

Challenge: Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles and a Strict Deadline

The core challenge was two-fold:

  1. Strict Indonesian Import Compliance: Importing key ingredients (buns, plant-based patties, potatoes) required registering each product and securing licenses from relevant Indonesian agencies, notably the food regulator BPOM. This process is known for being complex, meticulous, and time-consuming.
  2. Looming Deadline & Mandatory Changes: The restaurant was scheduled to open on December 19, 2019. Just before the deadline, it became mandatory (from December 17, 2019) that all products imported into Indonesia must be Halal certified, adding a critical and urgent compliance task to the scope.

Clarke Global’s Approach

Clarke Global Logistics Director Martin Moyano led the project, providing an advisory and hands-on support model that extended far beyond traditional freight forwarding.

1. Licensing & Compliance Setup

  • Researched Indonesian compliance requirements
  • Facilitated the required business and import licences
  • Registered key ingredients including buns, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plant-based patties

2. Product Registration & Documentation

Worked with Grill’d suppliers to compile the extensive documentation required, including:

  • Detailed product specifications
  • Ingredient lists
  • Photos of inner and outer packaging
  • Food safety certifications

Translated eight formal product letters into Indonesian for BPOM, covering:

  • Importer identity
  • Product acceptance
  • Acknowledgement of destination facility

3. Regulatory Adjustments

Clarke Global managed several regulatory hurdles, including:

  • Adapting bun packaging from 9kg to 10kg to comply with “not for retail” rules
  • Securing and validating Halal certificates for all products
  • Ensuring all items met Indonesia’s updated food regulations

4. Temperature-Controlled Logistics

Coordinated the airfreight shipment of 8 tonnes of frozen and chilled goods just days before the opening, carefully planned to withstand Bali’s ~35°C climate.

Results: On-Time Opening and Successful 8-Tonne Shipment

The project was completed successfully just two days before the restaurant’s opening deadline, validating the effectiveness of CGL’s hands-on, expert approach.

  • Delivery Success: 8 tonnes of frozen and chilled goods were successfully shipped by air to the hot climate of Bali, arriving safely and on time.
  • Business Impact: The first Grill’d Healthy Burgers restaurant in Bali opened and began trading successfully on schedule, a direct testament to the streamlined customs and compliance process managed by CGL.
  • New Service Validation: This case study validates Clarke Global Logistics’ capability to offer International Trade Auditing and Advisory as a core service, enabling clients to enter complex new markets with confidence.
