Is it safe to receive packages or goods from China?

Recent advice from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is that it is safe to receive packages and letters from China.  There is no risk of contracting COVID-19 as it can only survive on surfaces for a few hours (according to The World Health Organisation).  Wash your hands with soap and water when you can or use hand sanitiser when water is not convenient.

What about containerised goods?

Likewise it is safe to unpack containers imported on vessels that have come from mainland China.  Protective equipment such as masks or gloves are not required, but it is important to wash your hands frequently or to use hand sanitiser.

Are there any restrictions related to COVID-19 on importing goods?

There are no restrictions on importing goods into Australia.  However current travel restrictions may cause delays in some flights from mainland China, which may affect the arrival time of your goods into the country.

After a reduction in shipping activity, sea ports in China are now beginning to normalise operations. There may however be a back-log of goods to be shipped which may cause space issues on ships, resulting in increased volumes and rates.
